ATHLETES ARE TOLD WHAT TO DO MENTALLY. THEY ARE RARELY TAUGHT HOW.
Athletes hear: "Be confident" "Stop overthinking" "Forget the last play" "Stay focused" "handle the pressure"
But those instructions are incomplete without tools.
Parents often want to help but are unsure what to say after a tough game. Coaches may understand the importance of mindset but lack a practical system for teaching it consistently.
Built Different Mentally closes that gap.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Neil Wattier is a mental performance coach, educator, and Air Force veteran dedicated to helping young people develop the confidence, resilience, leadership, and emotional skills to support both performance and personal growth.
Over the course of his career, Neil has coached young athletes, collegiate rugby players, and U.S. Air Force fighter pilots in the mental skills required to perform under pressure. He also taught college-level psychology courses at Grand Canyon University, including sport and performance psychology, leadership, team building, and general psychology.
Drawing from experiences in athletics, higher education, and military aviation, Neil bridges the gap between mental performance theory and everyday application. His work equips parents, coaches, and young athletes with practical tools to build focus, emotional regulation, self-belief, resilience, and character, not just for competition, but for life.

D1 college rugby mental skills coach
Author, speaker & trainer
"What made Neil’s approach different was how he connected leadership, mental skills, and personal growth. His background in the military showed in the structure of his coaching. He built leadership from the ground up, helping athletes maximize their potential, and bring out the best in others, even those who did not yet see themselves as leaders.
For me, his greatest impact was on the mental side of the game. I struggled with overthinking, and Neil helped me learn how to compartmentalize my thoughts on the field. He taught me to use positive affirmations to remind myself of the confidence I already had in my abilities.
Neil also understood how to support young adults at a critical stage of life. He reminded us that we were not just becoming better athletes; we were becoming adults. His coaching helped us prepare for competition, but it also helped us prepare for the real world.
I still use his mindfulness tactics today. When training gets chaotic, I simplify. I focus on my breathing, return to the present moment, and regulate my emotions so I can be pinpoint accurate when it matters most.
Whether you’re an athlete chasing a championship, a parent supporting your child, or a coach looking to develop more than just physical talent, this book will give you practical tools that make a difference. Neil has a unique ability to simplify the mental side of performance into habits you can use every day. I experienced those lessons firsthand, and they continue to shape how I train, compete, and live. I’m grateful for his influence on my journey, and I’m confident the principles in these pages will help you become not only a better performer, but a stronger, more resilient person."
